What are rats?

For many people it is not necessary to read that of rats since simply compensating in one his head cannot avoid seeing that living beings are the only one that gives diseases, dirt and bad smells in return but we are going to define this rodent to call a little more “technical”.

Belonging to the Muridae family and to the genus known as rattus, rats were formerly difficult to distinguish from mice but much has happened since then and now they are fully recognizable.

Rats as such and individually do not hurt but if we see them as a plague, be very careful because things can get complicated for us.

We are going to see below all the information related to rats and of course what to do with them in any circumstance.

Main features

Size, weight and behavior

From a very young age, we all recognize rats easily, how can we not know how to do it? If they appear in the vast majority of children’s stories! But as we get older … the stories change, until we realize the reality of these animals, what a great disappointment!

Rats are mammalian animals and are part of the rodent family, but to the ugly part of it, right? You see, the same thing happens in all the houses! Luckily I belong to the graceful part … hahaha.

Jokes aside, they are all very similar in terms of their physiognomy, as they have an elongated body, a pointed snout and very flexible ears that reach the edge of their big eye when they are stretched forward. Its tail is also fine and elongated, almost as large as the body, and almost bare except for a few small scales and some short hair.

The color of the coat is usually brown, although light, it will depend on the species … what is true for all is that they are hairy like their tails, and that the belly area is always a lighter color.

As we have already said, certain aspects vary depending on the species of rat, such as size. Most weigh between 95 and 240 grams , although females are always somewhat lighter than males, and are between 17 and 21 cm in length, with an equally long tail.

A property of the tail of rats that almost nobody knows is that it is an excellent tool, and above all, that it helps them to control their jumps, as if it were a balance bar when walking on pipes, cables or ropes, and even while swimming.

That eats?

The diet of rats and other rodents is basically omnivorous, although there are usually preferences based on the species, as in everything. Thus, mice prefer cereal grains, the common rat loves meat and the black rat loves fruit, vegetables, cereals and nuts.

Lifecycle

As we have already said, they are mammals, and in order to explain the life cycle of rats , we must start by making it clear that it is a species that reproduces very quickly whose gestation period lasts approximately one month.

After this time, between 5 and 22 little rats will arrive in the world, which the mother rat will put inside a nest, what it will have been doing during this period using plant debris and hair, whether it falls off the rat itself or they find Over there.

The offspring, as expected, will be born very small, about 5 or 6 grams in weight, hairless, with closed eyes and deaf than a wall, with zero hearing capacity. It’s hard to imagine it, so I’d better leave you a photo !

When the offspring feed through the mother’s breasts (females have 5 pairs of breasts, two pectorals and three inguinals.) And begin to grow, reference must be made to the development of the females, since having elapsed only from 5 to 6 weeks are already mature enough to start reproducing‚Ķ they are way ahead.

On the contrary, the males take a few days longer, which compared to us humans, is a long time. Once this period is reached, the starting gun is fired so that they can start the new reproductive cycle.
